Dr. Floss is the Boss

Children’s book by Dan Gutman with illustrations by Jim Paillot. Harper: New York, 2019. Part of the “My Weirder-est School” series.

It is National Dessert Day so the school nurse has invited a dentist, Dr. Floss, to come talk to the students. That’s when weird things begin to happen. Instead of encouraging the students to take care of their teeth, Dr. Floss tells them to eat lots of sweet treats so they get lots of cavities, and she can buy herself a new car with all the money she will get from doing fillings. Later, several other unusual characters drop by their class, including Capitan Plaque, who battles the superhero Fluoride, and the Tooth Fairy. Oddly, they look suspiciously like the school librarian, the principal, and Dr. Floss. Interspersed with grade school humor, this early chapter book covers oral hygiene, losing teeth, dental fears, and getting a cavity filled.
