Narrative excerpt from dental/dental hygiene trainee

Dental/dental hygiene trainees discuss access to care and language barriers. (2023)

I feel like we use family a lot. I know there’s a large controversy. I saw a [. . .] patient yesterday. She was eight. She spoke good English, but her mom only spoke Spanish. So when I need to get Mom to consent for something, the eight-year-old goes, “Oh, I’ll translate.” I was like, “Oh, no, I don’t feel comfortable with this.” Luckily, one of my classmates that I’m in the group with speaks Spanish, so she did it. But yeah, that eight-year-old was like, “Oh, I’ll do it. It’s fine.”- Dental Transcripts p 36
