Narrative excerpt from patient/community member

Patients/community members discuss treatment costs and access to care. (2023)

I just got out of federal prison, and they supposed to pay for all I did and stuff when I was in federal prison. The Covid was going on so we couldn’t go to the dentist, you feel, get our teeth cleaned and none of that, and now I’m out. I’m going through so much even I went through so much even just to get this two pulled in the back of my mouth when the fed is supposed to pay for it.
So when…
The federal government, they’re supposed to pay for all our mouth, glasses, all that. So I’m going through some stuff with them right now because I’m in this halfway house and I can’t even get taken care of. Just like I was in prison, they supposed to call us every six months for a teeth cleaning in prison. I was in there four years then I didn’t get my teeth cleaned. But before I went to prison, you know what I’m saying, I had insurance through my disability and I went every six months. The general dental get my teeth cleaned, know what I’m, I ain’t let them snatch nothing by my mouth. But I just had to go there this time because the federal government wasn’t pay for the [dental clinic name].
